A link exchange works like this I agree to put your ‘follow’ link in my featured links section and in that agreement you agree to put a ‘follow’ link of my main website on your website. If at any time you decided to noFollow my link on your webpage then I will in return take your link down.

Now if you are new webmaster you might not know what noFollow means and inadvertently trigger it by accident. Webmasters have the right to deny search engines to index, which means list our website pages within the search engines. How we do this is by designating follow or noFollow tags to certain pages and content of our website. These tags are the first thing a search engine robot reads before following links and content within our site. So hence the term ‘follow’ and ‘noFollow’. By doing this we can ensure search engines are not indexing and listing private pages eg. WordPress login screen.  By keeping your WordPress login page set to noFollow puts one more hurdle in the way for a hacker to compromise your website. It still can be accessed by them but they cannot just click a link within a search engine making it much easier on their part.

As a new webmaster eventually you will get an email from another webmaster stating they would like to participate in a link exchange. Only you find out they did not want the link partnership in the first place but they wanted a one way link called a ‘referring link’ which holds more weight than a link exchange. So they will set your link to ‘noFollow’ purposely hoping you will not check the tags. So now you know how some unethical webmasters posing as a “partner” are only looking to leach one-way links.
