Last night I was searching specifically for PHP Video Tutorials and I came across a very interesting find.
First let me explain a bit about learning, the types and what you should be looking for especially when seeking out reference materials to learn complex web development languages.
There are primarily three types of learning styles.
The first being visual learners. This style of learning helps individuals who learn through seeing. Whether it be through pictures or video. The visual learner will learn best when this style of teaching is applied. I am categorized as a visual learner. I have a hard time concentrating and retaining what I hear especially if I cannot see it visually some way.
The second type of learner is auditory learners. These individuals have no problem with learning from just hearing the teacher’s voice. You might find this hard like I do. Especially depending on the tone and pitch of the voice I’m listening to. A good example would be if the teachers tone and pitch is flat and constant it does not keep me engage I will often doze and literally fall asleep.
The third type of learning style is referred to as a Kinesthetic. This comprises of learners that retain what is being taught through a hands-on approach. A great example would be lab day in science class where the pupil gets to perform experiments on their own which requires hand and eye movement. They will often excel in these areas over their peers.
With that knowledge I know what to look for when I want to study a subject. So should you.
I came across http://phpvideotutorials.com/ which uses an unorthodox method of teaching. I should clarify I seen and heard about Phonetics before but I have never seen it applied like the way the instructor at PHP Video Tutorials does. If you navigate to their website and click the free tutorials link you can download the first 10 or so lessons for free. When watching the first video and a minute into it I almost shut it off and saying “this guy is not right in the head” but if you wait it out like I did you soon find yourself grasping php concepts quickly than you would from any normal teaching method.
You might be asking yourself why is PHP so Important to website building? Simply put PHP is an open source scripting language that is specially designed for web development to embed within html of a webpage. This gives us webmasters a free and easy way to create applications we may need within our website. A prime an example is you can build a fully functional shopping cart with PHP and HTML. This is just one example of the many ways it can help us. Knowledge is the key here. Either you plan to hire a web developer when you start getting a fair amount of visitors or learn some basics of PHP to save you some money.

Hey Scot,
what an excellent article & simply because for the first time in 50+ years someone has finally categorized my style of learning (kinesthetic) and accepted that we all do learn by different methods.
When I first got into WordPress a few years ago, I had no end of trouble because everytime I asked a question in their forum, the only answers I ever got were “You should have read the guidelines & instructions”, no matter how often I tried to explain that I cannot work or learn that way, I just kept getting stone walled, because they all assumed I was just too lazy to read the “WP Bible”.
So thanks again for at least accepting that there are people exactly like me that have extreme difficulty learning from a book !

I think visual and kinesthetic learners have a hard time adjusting in the current school systems. Most of what you find in schools and colleges is geared towards auditory learners which leaves behind the Kinesthetic and Visual learners.
The internet has opened all that up. You can actually learn more on the internet in one day than you could one month in the classroom setting. I find myself looking for content that is video based so I can see how it is being done more and more to retain that knowledge easier.
If you take this all a step farther and consider the way we are graded by our IQ which is another interesting subject to consider. You find that some of the greatest artists and achievers of the past grade low by IQ standards.
IQ is based on how well people memorize things. Which undoubtedly ties in with how people are taught and how the current school systems fails to recognize all the major types of learners.
