A visitor can leave comments for a number of purposes but I think the majority of comments out there are comprised of people looking to get the word out about their website. By setting your comments to the dofollow attribute you not only give the visitor a chance to express their opinion but give them an incentive to post.
As we stated nofollow was first introduced by search engines to combat spam but the dawn of anti-spam plugins allow us to block every spam comment posted already. If you use WordPress you will find a built in plugin called Akismet. What it does it catches spam comments against the Akismet web services before they are posted and archived for a later review.
Although I found this plugin beneficial it still allows some spam to get through that is why I use it in conjunction with Conditional CAPTCHA for WordPress. What this plugin does is before a commenter can comment they have to fill in the field and use the correct words in an image. The bot program cannot decipher these images so they will be denied from posting.
By default WordPress sets all comments to nofollow in order to set them to dofollow you must install a plugin that will bypass this feature. I use Do Follow WordPress plugin to get this done.
