SEO Links

Today I want to cover the different types of link found within a website and how to use them to your benefit for SEO purposes.

Interlinking

Interlinking is when a link within your domain points to other content within the same domain. When you link to other similar content it holds the most weight for listing higher within search engines.

Outbound Links

An outbound link is when you link to another website within your domain. The link is point outbound from your website. Again the key is to optimize the most link weight. Remember link weight is judge by whether the link is relevant to the content. The more relevant the link the more it will hold value to search engines.

Inbound Links

An inbound link consists of links that other webmasters provide to their visitors pointing to your website. Inbound links are the most important part when it comes to SEO purposes. Relevancy plays a key role here too. But more importantly if you have other high pageranking websites linking to your site the more value your website will hold in the eye of search engines.  High ranking inbound links will drive PageRank for your website. The more people link to you the higher your PageRank will be.

More importantly is whether the link is dofollow or nofollow. These are called link attributes that you can apply to links you craft for your visitors.

Nofollow links

Nofollow links are links that search engines do not follow. If a search bot comes to your website scans the content and runs across a link that has nofollow applied to it, then the search engine will not continue to follow that link. This ensures PageRank cannot flow to that said link. When nofollow was introduced it was to allow search engines more importantly webmasters to combat against spam comments that could affect you diversely. Meaning any link set to nofollow couldn’t affect your site either positively or negatively.

With the advent of anti-spam plugins though, nofollow links are no longer needed per se. This is especially important if you do not allow comments to be posted automatically. Meaning you the webmaster has full discretion of which comments and links are posted to your site. These comments can also be edited to allow you to craft links that are only relevant to your visitors.

Dofollow Links

Dofollow links allow PageRank to flow. When a search engine bot runs across a dofollow link it continues to follow that link. It then weighs whether that link is relevant to the current content and detects if it is spam. If it is spam it will negatively affect you listing and rank within Google.

Let me remind you though by allowing dofollow links you can greatly increase your seo, linkjuice and listings that is if you take the time to weed out the spam comments. Like I said though this can be done with a few plugins were you will never see spam content again and allow dofollow links to positively affect you search engine rank, listing and let PageRank to flow.
