Searching for the right WordPress quizzes plugin proved to be more difficult than the WP-Polls Plugins we covered yesterday.

Benefits of a WordPress Quiz Plugin

From the webmaster’s standpoint…

  • Quizzes get your readers engaged on your website for a greater length of time. This will decrease your bounce rate.
  • They allow webmaster’s to gauge reader comprehension.
  • Quizzes can help webmaster’s brainstorm future content ideas that will increase the value of your content.

From the visitor’s standpoint…

  • It can expand the mind of people taking the quiz.
  • Can help them have epiphanies and revelations.
  • It helps them to realize and resolve problems they might be having.
  • Helps them understand the topic at hand.

WordPress Quizzin Plugin by Binny V A is one of the few quiz plugins that can be used as a widget.

Quizzin lets you add quizzes to your blog. This plugin is designed to be as easy to use as possible. Quizzes, questions, and answers can be added from the admin side. This will appear in your post if you add a small HTML snippet in your post.

I would rate this plugin a 6 on a scale of 10.

Cons:

  • The reason for the lower score is because there are virtually no instructions on how to use this plugin.
  • From what I read on the WordPress Support forum the author does not offer much support for it either.
  • I also found that the plugin has a few bugs but it is manageable. For instance disappearing text in the Quizzin visual creation window.  You have to highlight the text with your cursor to see it.
  • You need to use another WordPress plugin to get it to display as a widget. The additional plugin needed is Advanced Text Widget.

Although these are just minor annoyances like I said I did manage to get this plugin up and running on the latest WordPress Platform revision. Remember alot of these developers do not get paid for the plugins they offer. So a special thanks goes out to Binny for offering his time and sharing this easy to use quiz plugin with us.

Pros:

  • You can leave an explanation to the correct answer. This expands the knowledge of the visitors.
  • Allows you to create multiple quizzes
  • You can add pictures and videos to the quiz.
  • The quiz can be add to a post or page

If you would like some step by step instructions on how to use this plugin please take the poll to the right on the sidebar. I would be glad to write up a detailed how to use WordPress quiz plugin tutorial.

Thank you for the hint with the ‘Advanced Text Widget’. I’ve tried to use the QUIZZIN with the ‘Display Single Post’ but this doens’t work, because the answer page will be display in the sidebar.

  2. I loved this plugin, the only problem I have found is that there is no way for the administrator to see the results of the quiz…

    Am I missing something?

    • Scot Manaher says:

David my first answer was a little confusing. No you can not see the answers or statistics of the user results. I will be looking into reviewing a new quiz plugin with that functionality.

  3. Anthony says:

I am getting this error when trying to create a new quiz

“You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

However I am logged in as the Admin.

    Any suggestions?

  4. Lauren says:

Thanks for the info, Scott! Do you happen to know of a plug-in for a multiple choice quiz in which there are no wrong or right answers. Instead, each possible answer is given a value. (Choice A = 4, choice B – 3, etc.) At the end, the person’s score is totaled and revealed to them. (They would then see which category they fall into, based upon their score. Kind of like a personality test.) Thanks so much!

  5. Scot Manaher says:

Anthony have you logged in as another user besides the Admin lately? I would try to clear your browser cookies and your saved preferences. Then restart your browser. I will try to reproduce and research this error to help troubleshoot the problem you are experiencing.

Lauren do you mean a plugin that is similar to an exam that is graded in college or high school? I will do research for you in the meantime, but try to type “exam” into WordPress plugin search field.

I came up with two promising results, wbExam that can be downloaded at http://kanslozebagger.org/wbexam and HEXAM that can be found at http://webania.net/hexam/.

I have not reviewed or installed either of those plugins I referenced above. I will post an entry before the end of the week to review each of those plugins for you Lauren.

    • Lauren says:

Thanks so much, Scott. What would make this different from a college exam is that answers are not graded as correct or incorrect. This would be more like a Cosmo Magazine Quiz (if you’ve ever seen one of those:-) Five multiple choice questions. Each answer choice for each question is given a certain number of points, from 1 – 4. So if you got a “4″ for each of your responses, you’d get a score of “20.” If you got a “3″ on each of your answers, you’d get a “15″ and so on. I’m looking for a plug-in that would allow me to assign the respective number of points for each answer possibility. THEN I’d like it add the points and give a total.

I’ll check out the two you suggested. Thank you again.

I was thinking about your problem Anthony and it is probably due to one of your folders on your web-server does not have the correct permissions set to create new quizzes. I will research this more for you in the morning.

    • Tom says:

I’m having the same problem as Anthony :(

Wp-Polls “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

I can delete the sample poll installed with the plugin, but cannot create new polls as error page comes up “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

      Thanks for you help

  7. Scot Manaher says:

Did you recently upgrade the wp-polls plugin? Sometimes when upgrading a plugin and the upgrade is not completely successful it will throw an error like that. I would try to reinstall the plugin to see if this solves your problem.

Before you delete the plug-in make sure you backup it up from your web-server first, that way you do not lose any valuable polls you already have. If your polls can be easily recreated then this should not be a problem.

  8. Ali says:

Do you know if there’s a way to keep the plugin from cacheing the results so users can take the quiz as many times as they’d like? I’m hoping to rig this plugin up as a trivia widget — I haven’t been able to find a better option.

Thanks for your thorough review of this plugin!

    • Scot Manaher says:

That is a good idea Ali. Let me look into the code tonight and see if I can disable the user caching.

I just wanted to add a good start to disable the recoding of the IP would be in polls-logs.php file. I will look into it more though.

      • Ali says:

Thanks for your response, Scot! I’ll take a look at the polls-logs.php file and will check back to see if you come up with a solution yourself.

        • Scot Manaher says:

My bad we are talking about the Quizzin plugin so their will not be a poll-log.php file. I will check the files now. The basic idea is the user input is recorded by IP address. So that recording of the IP would need to be disabled in the code.

  9. John says:

    Hi Scott,

We have a client who has a custom written English language test they have been using for students wanting to test their English language knowledge and skills before joining classes. It is a multiple choice questionnaire and admin issues a code to users to log in after setting up reporting in the back end (of the custom written app).

The backend allows admin to define the name of the company of the user (not necessary) but also defines the number of times the test can be taken and logs the results.

The test has stopped working after we moved hosts and the programmer says the code is a nightmare.

Anything you can suggest or come across that could be used as a replacement?

  10. Scot Manaher says:

John if you moved hosts then I would contact your new hosting provider to get it working for you. Usually you can transfer to a new host seamlessly if you backup your database and WordPress. It sounds like you DB tables did not update after the transfer. If this backup was not done then you pretty much have to reinstall the plugin and start over.

As for an alternative I think that would make a really great post, especially considering how popular WordPress quiz plugins are becoming. So please check my blog later this week.

Can anyone tell me a good wordpress plugin I can use to send SMS messages to cell phones. I saw this on a website and I though it would make ppl stay on my site much longer. I recently created my site and it a work in progress. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  12. David says:

Any follow up suggestions on a good quiz plugin in 2012. Here’s what I need in a quiz plugin:

    1. Single answer questions.

    2. Open ended questions (ex: “For the last question in our quiz, tell us a little about yourself”).

    3. Ability to gather user info (Name, email, phone, etc.)

    4. Access to the results and user info!

Gravityforms looks like a fantastic plugin, but it doesn’t have any grading/scoring functionality. I’d gladly pay for it if it had a scoring function.

Watu is new on the scene in. But it’s just a light version of the standalone php version. It can score results, but there’s no way to receive the results in the current plugin form.

Looks like the Quizzin plugin hasn’t been updated in almost 1000 days!
